If you have decided to buy a dog of this breed, first talk to people who already own beagles or visit a local dog show. Write to the AKC for the addresses of breed clubs. Read as much as is possible about the breed (temperament, health, grooming, breed standard). Price shouldn't be the main factor in choosing the breeder. Very often a high price doesn't guarantee high quality.

- Ask as many questions of you as you do of them.
- Plan to keep one of the puppies in order to continue improving the breed.
- Have interest in the breed for at least 2-3 years (Beagle club membership, Championship or performance titles).
- Advise you other breeders if they don't have a dog suitable for you.
- Write a contract when selling a dog.
- Provide a pedigree, a registration slip, up-to-date health records with every puppy.
- Discuss honestly problems connected with the breed.
- Offer help and assistance for the life of the beagle.
- Breed 1-2 litters a year, not more.
- Have dogs, which are humanely cared for, clean, happy and happy.
Beagle Dogs - Responsible breeders don't:
- Breed simply to sell.
- Appear to get rid of a puppy.
- Have "mated pairs".
- Sell puppies to pet shops or to people they haven't met.
- Sell puppies that are younger than 7 weeks.
- Sell puppies without papers or charge extra for it.
- Claim that their beagles have no problems.
