Beagle Dogs - Behavior

The beagle is a smart, active, bright hound with highly developed sense of smell. As a pack hunter the beagle loves companionship, whether human or canine. It explores and chases everything, so in temperate climates it can live outdoors with shelter and bedding. It's an independent breed, but given enough training it's a calm, tolerant pet, always ready to join in a game. The beagle's moderate size and close hard coat enable the dog to traverse rough terrain. It's not difficult to follow the beagle on foot. It barks and howls, its melodious bay helps locate it from a great distance.

Beagle Dogs - Description

The beagle is a small, compact, shorthaired hound. There exist two versions of beagles: those 13-15 inches and others smaller. The color of a purebred beagle can be tri-color (black, white and tan); red and white; tan and white. There should be white color on feet and the tip of the tail (to make them easy to follow in the field, as waving white tips shows the pack's location). The ears are usually low, with rounded tips. The beagle's eyes are dark brown or hazel with soft and pleading expression. The tail should not be curled over the back.

Beagle Dogs - Health

The beagles in elderly age run the risk of inter-vertebral disc disease, glaucoma, and cataracts. Sometimes they inherit deafness and hemophilia. But the major problem in the middle age is obesity. Even few extra pounds can cause serious problems with obesity as this leads to joint and muscular diseases, diabetes, pancreatitis, problems with liver and skin. And no doubt obesity shortens the dog's life and tells on the quality of life.

Beagle Dogs - Nutrition

Beagles should be fed once or twice a day. You shouldn't leave food out free choice. Beagles by no means should eat table scraps and become a garbage disposal. These dogs don't know measure in food and can eat to excess. Sure it's difficult to ignore the beagle's pleading for food, but overeating can lead to severe stomach ache and expensive treatment in the long run. If the dog puts on weight, the caloric intake should be cut down and exercises should be intensified. To check the condition of the dog, you should palpate the rib cage. If it's easy to feel the dog's ribs and to see the waistline from above then it's OK. If the dog needs light food, change it gradually, adding small amounts of new food in a period of a week. This technique is recommended also for switching from one brand of food to another. It prevents their stomach from upset.

Beagle Dogs - Grooming

Beagles need weekly grooming, which include a rubdown to remove loose hair, nail trimming and bathing. Pay special attention to cleaning the beagle's ears, because they need air circulation. Don't allow water or oils in the beagles' ears and do plug them before bathing.
