If masters work during the day, the beagles will be happy by themselves, but it's better not to leave them for more then 9 hours. They should have nylabones to chew on them. As for exercise, beagles should have several 3-mile walks per week. If you work much and don't have time for yourself, don't get a beagle. If you want a toy dog sitting at your lap while you are watching TV, don't get a beagle either. They need little care, but lots of attention, play and walk.

It's interesting that beagles get along really well with cats. They like to chase cats, but wouldn't harm them, just play. Sometimes the play fight turns out real, but after that they never fight again. Beagles are like two-year-old children; they loose interest soon if they don't get a response to their actions. The fact is that beagles have a longer puppyhood than other breeds and they don't loose a playful puppy attitude through their long and active lives.

It's practically impossible to teach a beagle to walk without a leash by your side. It goes against for what beagles were bred. They have a burning desire to sniff the ground in search of new smells. It means that trying to change its behavior is cruel; it frustrates the dog and the owner. Just let a beagle be a beagle and don't try to walk him without a leash, for they may get hit by a car if they catch the scent of something interesting.

Although beagles are clever and affectionate, they have their own agenda. Sometimes they can be very stubborn when they are not allowed to do what they want to do. Beagles get nervous, become bored and destructive. It's not a secret that beagles are more challenging to train than other breeds; sometimes they are hard to housebreak. You should read about as many methods as is possible and try the best way, not for you, but for your beagles.
